Four Qualities, One Diamond
The 4Cs are the global standard for grading every diamond, lab-grown and natural alike.
Developed to give buyers a clear, consistent way to compare stones, the 4Cs describe the four characteristics that define a diamond's beauty and value. Understanding how they work together, and where to focus your budget, is the key to choosing the perfect stone.
Cut
How well the diamond is shaped and faceted to return light. The biggest driver of sparkle.
Colour
How colourless the stone is, graded from D (icy white) down to Z.
Clarity
The absence of tiny natural marks, called inclusions and blemishes.
Carat
The weight of the diamond, and the most visible measure of its size.
Cut
Cut is the most important of the 4Cs. It refers not to a diamond's shape, but to how expertly its facets are proportioned, angled, and polished. A superb cut sends light bouncing back to your eye as brilliance and fire; a poor cut leaves even a flawless stone looking dull.
Because it has the greatest impact on sparkle, cut is the one C we recommend never compromising on.
Colour
Diamond colour is really about the absence of colour. The grading scale runs from D, completely colourless and the most prized, down to Z, with a noticeable warm tint. The less colour a diamond holds, the rarer and more brilliant it appears.
For most settings, a stone in the D to H range looks bright white to the eye, offering an ideal balance of beauty and value.
Clarity
Clarity measures the tiny natural characteristics found in almost every diamond: internal inclusions and surface blemishes. The fewer and smaller these are, the higher the clarity grade and the rarer the stone.
Many diamonds graded VS or SI are "eye-clean", meaning no marks are visible without magnification, making them a smart, beautiful choice.
Carat
Carat is the unit of weight, not size, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. Because larger diamonds are rarer, price rises sharply as carat increases, especially at landmark weights like 1.0 and 2.0 carats.
Two diamonds of equal carat can look very different depending on their cut and shape, which is why carat should always be considered alongside the other three Cs, never on its own.
If you take one thing away: prioritise Cut for maximum sparkle, choose a colour and clarity that look flawless to the eye rather than only on paper, and let carat follow. That is how you get the most beautiful diamond for your spend.
The Cs Work As A Team
No single C makes a diamond beautiful on its own. A large carat with a poor cut will look lifeless, while a smaller, expertly cut stone can outshine it completely. The magic lies in the balance.
Every Shinewine diamond is graded across all four Cs by an independent laboratory and arrives with certification, so you always know exactly what you are choosing.
Good To Know
Cut. It has the greatest effect on how much a diamond sparkles, so a well-cut stone will always look more brilliant, even next to a larger one.
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded on exactly the same 4Cs, by the same laboratories, as natural diamonds.
An eye-clean diamond has no inclusions or blemishes visible to the naked eye. Many VS and SI clarity stones are eye-clean, offering great value.
Not necessarily. A larger diamond with a weak cut or low colour can look worse than a smaller, better-balanced stone. Consider all four Cs together.
