Also called a grading report, a diamond certificate is issued by an impartial gemological laboratory with no stake in the sale. Certificate vs Appraisal
These two documents are often mixed up, but they serve different purposes. A certificate is an unbiased scientific description of a diamond's quality, issued by a grading laboratory that never assigns a price.
An appraisal, by contrast, estimates a monetary value, usually for insurance, and is best obtained after purchase. Look to the certificate to understand your diamond; look to an appraisal to insure it.
